Schneider Mátyás is a petite bourgeois turned transport entrepreneur. His wife, a woman with an air of snobbery, tries to turn her household into something more distinguishable than it actually is by taking on a butler. Hyppolit, formerly a butler with the family of a count, makes a mess of the Schneiders' life by imposing the ways of aristocracy on his new employers. Although Schneider is a born petite bourgeois sticking to his old habits, he grudgingly accepts the rules set by the bossy butler. Terka, Schneider's daughter, is in love with Benedek István, the family's employee. Mrs. Schneider has already picked someone with the background of an aristocrat to become her daughter's future husband. The engagement ceremony does, however, turn into the scene of a scandal, when Schneider's mistress, a dance hostess, turns up at the party. Eventually, Schneider decides to face up to the bossiness of Hyppolit, and the party ends after the merriment of Terka and István's own engagement ceremony. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)
