I kto by pomyślał, że pewnego dnia rzuci sobie do stóp całe miasteczko i powali na kolana wielką korporację? Erin cudem zdobywa pracę w kancelarii wziętego adwokata Eda Masry (Albert Finney). Wertując akta odkrywa, że potężny koncern doprowadził do zanieczyszczenia wody w małym prowincjonalnym miasteczku, którego mieszkańcy od dawna zapadają na najrozmaitsze choroby. Z pomocą Eda kieruje sprawę do sądu, który przyznaje reprezentowanym przez nią klientom odszkodowanie w wysokości 333 milionów dolarów, największe w historii amerykańskiego wymiaru sprawiedliwości. Steven Soderbergh sometimes knows what he's doing and sometimes just annoys the crap out of you. And a personal story of a woman in contemporary society simply could not end any differently than the latter. When Julia Roberts plays effort, plays determination, and plays deserved success, it has a tendency to land in such a way that I don't believe her one bit. Not a single bit of genuine emotion drips from any of the actors present, and Soderbergh constantly screws over the viewer who wants to see the drama he's promised. At the same time, he subtly flatters all critics of society (the disgustingly opportunistic public vs. freedom and family values). Sometimes you can fool Americans just by changing the curtains.

I thought that it would be Julia who would be the most interesting thing in the film, but she wasn't. In fact, she didn't suit the role. I thought she was a little too Hollywood for what she was playing, but oh well. Albert Finney intrigued me more, as did the story, which is one of those examples that sometimes justice does prevail, at least a little. Or at least about people getting money, if not life.
