Babylon Berlin, spring 1929: A metropolis in turmoil. From economy to culture, politics to the underworld – everything is in the grip of radical change. Speculation and inflation are already tearing away at the foundations of the still young Weimar Republic. Growing poverty and unemployment stand in stark contrast to the excesses and indulgence of the city's night life and its overflowing creative energy. Gereon Rath, a young police inspector from Cologne, is transferred to Berlin in order to solve a criminal case – a porno ring run by the Berlin Mafia. What at first glance appears to be simply a matter of extortion soon reveals itself to be a scandal that will forever change the lives of both Gereon and his closest associates. Together with stenotypist Charlotte Ritter and his partner Bruno Wolter, Rath is confronted with a tangled web of corruption, drug dealing, and weapons trafficking, forcing him into an existential conflict as he is torn between loyalty and uncovering the truth. And we are left wondering: in this story, who is friend and who is foe? (HBO Europe)

angielski A strong four stars. An awesome film noir (or should I say ‘series noir’?) set in the Weimar Republic, which was a fertile breeding ground for various political factions, as well as a thorn in the side of many Germans. I've always liked interwar Germany, just as much as I like the period of Prohibition in the US. The story was very well written, and I was pleased with the acting performances and the great atmosphere. All in all, I'm very happy with the first season. ()

angielski The first half of Gereon Rath's case is truly fascinating. Amidst corruption, and pornography, but also the spectacular world of the jazz club Moka Efti... The late years of the Weimar Republic were never as attractive to the public as they are here. Nothing is black and white. Alongside the problems of ordinary people, there are dramas playing out in high politics, with the poor having fun alongside those at the top. The period realities are great. People on Sunday is screening in the movie theater, and casting for The Blue Angel is taking place in the film studios... The first eight episodes are a gripping blend of period fresco and raw crime drama. ()

angielski Babylon Berlin is exactly the type of European series that HBO has been advertising since it started airing. I took my time, but when a slightly boring period came in the summer, I decided to see if I would also be so excited. And yes, the first series is really fantastic. It can be seen that the Germans have put a lot of money into it. Some shots from the time of the Weimar Republic are properly opulent, the music is fantastic, albeit often repetitive. The atmosphere is excellent and the acting performances are top-notch. However, I see the biggest stumbling block in the complexity and intertwining of individual storylines. The series basically does not offer one constant story, but shows life in Germany at the end of the 1920s, so a whole range of stories intertwine and it is easy to get lost in them. ()
