Who serves daily while keeping all the power for themselves? Is it death or perhaps human will? Jan Budař's dream project is as close to imperfection as it is to the heart. Ethereal, conciliatory, visually striking in the domain of the sinister, and teaching the viewer to cower under the table from the imitation of a grim reaper. This is how I imagine a Czech fairy tale if it were directed by Ben Wheatley. For the squeaky pub owners, I recommend turning on the subtitles, and it will immediately become more bearable.

Jan Budař's movie is undeniably original and truly peculiar. Ultimately, I gave it two stars because I cannot imagine a child enjoying this "fairy tale" enough to make it to the end. Not even the two lisping witches, whose story was great, made me give this a third star as they reminded me too much of Troška's movies, which I deeply detest. If it weren't for that, my rating would be higher because I found this bizarre thing somehow intriguing against my will. What blew me away was the concept of Death, thanks to the work of the director, screenwriter, and lead actor in one. I'm not a fan of his music, though. But still, everything turned out much better than I had initially expected. I liked Vladimír Javorský as the hangman and Bolek Polívka as the undertaker, but I prefer to remember Jana Nagyová as Arabela. / Lesson learned: Before you make any irreversible decisions, think it through so you don't end up in the closet.
