Opuszczając klinikę psychiatryczną Hunter Adams (Robin Williams), zwany Patchem, wie jedno: zostanie lekarzem, oczywiście - psychiatrą. Ale jakże innym niż ci, którzy go dotąd leczyli. Kiedy zjawia się w szpitalu, w salach chorych fruwają baloniki, skaczą piłki, słychać śmiechy i żarty. Drobne schorzenia uleczy przecież uśmiech, w trudniejszych przypadkach potrzeba clowna, a kiedy on nie da rady - pojawi się anioł. To, co robi Patch, jego nauczyciele widzą jako lekceważenie medycyny, a przede wszystkim - ich autorytetu. Ale jak usunąć ze studiów studenta, który osiąga najlepsze wyniki w nauce mimo skłonności do zwariowanych żartów? Dziekan Walcott ustaje w wysiłkach i już zdaje się być bliski sukcesu... (UIP)

Sometimes deeply moving and at others too brutally manipulative. The lighthearted mood suited me fully until about two-thirds of the way through, and even though I knew that if it had kept it up until the end, Patch Adams wouldn't have had a memorable conclusion to rely on, I still would have liked that more than the painful and unexpected twist. Because of it, I probably wouldn't watch this movie again. If you want to cry like I did, you can't miss it.

Even though it's quite sentimental at times, I just enjoyed this. Robin Williams demonstrates that he can beautifully blend the comedic and dramatic aspects, and in his case, it simply works perfectly. Yes, at times it’s overly sentimental, sometimes unnecessarily unbelievable, but also a beautiful story about a man who just wanted to help.
